Oyster Mushroom
The Oyster Mushroom bridges the worlds of culinary delight and medicinal significance. Widely cultivated across South Africa, it is also found wild on dead hardwoods. Its medicinal properties — centred on cholesterol-reducing lovastatin, immune-active beta-glucans, and anti-tumour polysaccharides — make it one of the most practically accessible functional foods available.
Pleurotus ostreatus contains lovastatin (a natural statin), which inhibits HMG-CoA reductase and contributes to cholesterol reduction. Its beta-glucan content activates the innate immune system via the Dectin-1 receptor pathway. Pleuran — the primary beta-glucan extract — has been the subject of multiple clinical studies. Additionally, Pleurotus is one of the few fungi shown to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons (mycoremediation) and is used industrially for bioremediation projects.
