Initially they start off as a white "egg" about 4.5cm to 5cm in diameter. The maximum length they can grow to is about 15cm. There are between four and seven, three-sided "tentacles", growing from the stem - usually five, which are between 1 cm and 2.5 cm long. When the mushrooms matures the arms separate from each other exposing its spores. The colour of the tentacles vary from pale yellow to brown, orange or even red. The white yellow-tinged volva from which it grows, is attached to the ground with what looks like a white cord.
Like all stinkhorns, the overpowering smell of rotten meat usually precedes its discovery. Needless to say, this mushroom is inedible.
